Short Speech on Gandhi Jayanti (1 Minute)

Classes 1 to 4126 wordsabout 1 min to speak

Good morning to our respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends.

Today is the 2nd of October, and we are celebrating Gandhi Jayanti, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. We lovingly call him Bapu, the Father of the Nation.

Gandhiji was born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. He helped India become free from British rule without using guns or swords. His weapons were truth and non-violence.

Bapu lived a very simple life. He wore khadi that he spun on his own charkha, and he kept his surroundings clean. He believed that every person is equal.

Can we follow Bapu? Yes, we can. We can speak the truth, keep our school clean and never hurt anyone.

Let us be honest, kind and clean, just like Bapu.

Thank you.

Speech on Gandhi Jayanti in English for Students (2 Minutes)

Classes 5 to 8278 wordsabout 2 min to speak

Good morning to our respected Principal, all my teachers and my dear classmates.

Every year on 2 October, India pauses to remember a thin man in a simple dhoti who walked with a stick and changed the course of history. Today is Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, whom the whole nation calls Mahatma Gandhi and Bapu.

His story began in Porbandar, a seaside town of Gujarat, on 2 October 1869. After training as a lawyer in London, he took up work in South Africa. There, one night, he was pushed out of a first-class carriage simply because he was not white. That insult did not make him angry. It made him determined to fight injustice, but in a peaceful way.

He came back to India in 1915 and gave our freedom struggle a new weapon: satyagraha, the force of truth. He stood with the indigo farmers of Champaran, led the Non-Cooperation Movement and walked to Dandi to make salt from sea water. In 1942, he gave the call of Quit India. Millions of ordinary people followed him, and in 1947 India became free.

Friends, do you know that the United Nations observes 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence? A man from a small town in Gujarat inspired the whole world.

But Gandhi Jayanti is not only a holiday. It is a reminder. Bapu cleaned toilets himself, wore clothes made of khadi and treated every person as equal. Can we not at least keep our classroom clean, speak the truth and stop bullying others?

Bapu once said that his life was his message. Let us make our lives a message too.

Thank you.

Long Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti Speech for Class 9 to 12

Classes 9 to 12471 wordsabout 4 min to speak

Good morning to our respected Principal, honoured teachers and my dear fellow students.

We have gathered here on 2 October to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It is one of the three national holidays of India, along with Republic Day and Independence Day. Today I would like to speak not only about what Gandhiji did, but about why his ideas still matter.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar on 2 October 1869. As a boy, he was shy and ordinary. He went to London to study law and later took up a case in South Africa. There, in 1893, he was pushed out of a first-class compartment at Pietermaritzburg station because he was Indian. He spent that cold night thinking about whether to return home or to stay and fight. He chose to stay. Over the next twenty-one years, he organised Indians in South Africa and developed the method he called satyagraha.

When he returned to India in 1915, he travelled across the country by third-class train to understand its people. In 1917, he took up the cause of the indigo farmers of Champaran in Bihar. In 1920 came the Non-Cooperation Movement, when he urged Indians to boycott foreign cloth, return government titles and stay away from British-run schools and courts. In 1930, he walked from Sabarmati Ashram to the seashore at Dandi and picked up a handful of salt, breaking an unjust law. In 1942, he told the British to quit India and told Indians to do or die. On 15 August 1947, the country became free.

Friends, what made this frail man so powerful? It was not money or an army. It was the strength of his principles. He believed in truth, even when it was uncomfortable. He believed in non-violence, even when others were violent. He believed that the dignity of labour was real, so he spun his own yarn and cleaned his own ashram. He fought against untouchability and called for respect for every person.

Gandhiji was killed on 30 January 1948, a day we now remember as Martyrs' Day. But ideas cannot be shot. In 2007, the United Nations declared 2 October the International Day of Non-Violence. Leaders of civil rights movements in other countries learnt from his methods.

So, what does Gandhi Jayanti ask of us, students of today? It asks us to settle arguments with words, not fists. It asks us to tell the truth when copying would be easier. It asks us to respect the cleaner, the guard and the canteen worker as much as anyone else. It asks us to buy less, waste less and live simply.

We may never lead a nation. But each of us can lead our own life with honesty and courage. That would be the finest birthday gift to Bapu.

Thank you.

Gandhi Jayanti Speech by Principal or Teacher

Teachers341 wordsabout 3 min to speak

Good morning to my fellow teachers, members of our staff and my dear students.

I am happy to see so many of you dressed in white and khadi this morning, and I enjoyed the songs and the short play that our students presented. Thank you to everyone who prepared for this Gandhi Jayanti assembly.

Children, when we think of Mahatma Gandhi, we usually think of big events: the Dandi March, the Quit India Movement and India's freedom in 1947. These are important, and you must know them well. But today I want to talk about the small habits that made Gandhiji great, because those are habits you can start today.

The first habit is honesty. As a schoolboy in Porbandar and Rajkot, Mohandas was an average student. What made him different was that he tried to admit his mistakes. Later in life, he wrote about his failures openly in his autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth. How many of us can say sorry so easily?

The second habit is cleanliness. Bapu believed that cleanliness was as important as freedom. In his ashram, everyone, including Gandhiji himself, cleaned the toilets and swept the floors. No work was too small for him.

The third habit is self-reliance. He spun yarn on the charkha every day and wore the cloth made from it. He wanted every Indian to stand on their own feet.

The fourth habit is respect for all. He treated a farmer, a weaver and a king in the same way.

So, my dear students, here is my request. For the next month, let each class choose one of these four habits and practise it seriously. Clean your classroom without being asked. Tell the truth even when it is hard. Fix something yourself instead of throwing it away. Thank the people who serve us every day.

When we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti in this way, we do not just remember Bapu; we bring his ideas to life in our school.

I wish all of you a meaningful Gandhi Jayanti. Thank you.

Gandhi Jayanti Essay in English (150 Words)

Classes 4 to 6146 words

On 2 October, India remembers the man who won freedom for the country without firing a single bullet. This day is Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat.

Gandhiji used truth and non-violence as his weapons against British rule. Three great campaigns carry his stamp: Non-Cooperation in 1920, the Salt March of 1930 and Quit India in 1942. His simple life of khadi, the charkha and hard work inspired millions of Indians to join the freedom struggle.

Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday. On this day, people offer flowers at Raj Ghat in Delhi, sing prayer songs and remember his teachings. Schools organise speeches, drawing competitions and cleanliness drives.

The best way to celebrate this day is to follow Bapu's ideas: to be honest, to keep our surroundings clean and to treat every person with respect.

Essay on Gandhi Jayanti (450 Words)

Classes 7 to 10451 words

Introduction

Some birthdays belong to a family, and some belong to a whole nation. Gandhi Jayanti, celebrated on 2 October, is one of the second kind. It marks the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, honoured as the Father of the Nation and known affectionately as Bapu. Along with Republic Day and Independence Day, it is one of India's three national holidays.

The Life Behind the Day

Gandhiji was born in 1869 in Porbandar, a coastal town in Gujarat, to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. After studying law in London, he went to South Africa in 1893. That same year, he was thrown out of a first-class train compartment at Pietermaritzburg because of his skin colour, an incident that changed the direction of his life. He stayed there for about twenty-one years, leading campaigns for the rights of Indians, and returned to India in 1915.

Over the next three decades, he turned the freedom movement into a movement of ordinary people. Farmers, students, women and workers joined the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement. Through peaceful protest, fasting and civil disobedience, he showed that a nation could resist a powerful empire without hatred. India won its independence in 1947, and a few months later, on 30 January 1948, Gandhiji was assassinated.

How Gandhi Jayanti Is Celebrated

The day begins with homage at Raj Ghat in New Delhi, the memorial where Gandhiji was cremated. Flowers are laid, and prayer meetings with songs of peace are held. Across the country, people garland his statues and portraits.

Schools and colleges hold special assemblies with speeches, poems, quizzes and short plays on his life. Many students take part in cleanliness drives, since cleanliness was close to his heart. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a national cleanliness mission, was launched on this day in 2014. Khadi exhibitions and spinning demonstrations remind people of his message of self-reliance.

Gandhi Jayanti Around the World

In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2 October the International Day of Non-Violence. Statues of Gandhiji stand in many countries, and his ideas influenced leaders of freedom and civil rights movements far beyond India. Every year on this day, events on peace and tolerance are held in schools, universities and embassies across the world, and his autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, continues to be read in many languages.

Conclusion

Gandhi Jayanti should not end with a holiday and a few speeches. Its real purpose is to make us ask whether we live by truth, non-violence and simplicity in our own small ways. If each of us chooses honesty over shortcuts and kindness over anger, Bapu's dream of a just and peaceful India will move closer to reality. Even a small act, like picking up litter or settling a quarrel calmly, keeps his message alive.
