How to Write an Essay on Any Topic
- Understand the topic: underline the key words and decide what the examiner really wants, a description, a story or an argument.
- Brainstorm for two minutes: write every idea that comes to mind, then keep the best four or five.
- Arrange the points: put them in a logical order and give each its own paragraph.
- Write a strong opening: a question, a short scene or a quotation works better than a plain definition.
- Finish with a message: end with a hope, a suggestion or a lesson instead of repeating the first paragraph.

Sample Essay on a Simple Topic: The Winter Season (150 Words)
When cold winds start blowing in November, I know my favourite season has arrived. Winter in North India lasts roughly from November to February. The days become short and the nights long and chilly. In the mornings, thick fog covers the roads, and cars move slowly with their lights on.
We take out woollen sweaters, caps, gloves and quilts from the big trunk. My grandmother sits in the sun on the terrace, knitting and peeling oranges for us. In the evenings, the family gathers near a small fire and talks for hours. Winter also brings the best food: hot soup, carrot halwa, peanuts, jaggery sweets and fresh green vegetables like peas and spinach.
The season is not easy for everyone. Poor people without warm clothes suffer a lot, so we should donate old blankets. Still, for me, winter means sunshine on cold mornings and warm family evenings.
Sample Argumentative Essay: Should Homework Be Banned? (150 Words)
Every evening, millions of Indian children sit at the dining table with a pile of notebooks. Should all this homework be banned? I believe it should be reduced, not removed.
Supporters of a ban make fair points. Long hours of written work leave children tired and stressed. They get little time for play, hobbies, family or sleep, all of which are needed for healthy growth. Some homework is also mere copying, which teaches nothing new.
However, a little homework has real value. It helps students revise what they learnt in class and shows teachers where a child needs help. It also builds habits of discipline and working on one's own. A short reading task or a few maths problems can do this in thirty minutes.
So, the answer is balance. Schools should give limited, meaningful homework and keep weekends free. Then learning will continue at home without stealing childhood.
How to Choose the Right Essay Topic
- Read all the essay topics in the question paper before choosing. Pick the one on which you can write at least five clear points.
- Choose a topic you have real examples for: something you have seen at school, at home or in your town.
- For class 1 to 5, simple topics about family, animals, seasons and school are safest and easiest to describe.
- In class 6 to 10, broad topics like pollution or technology work best when you narrow them to one angle, such as plastic waste in your area.
- For an essay competition, avoid the most common angle. A fresh opening story or an unusual example makes judges remember your essay.
- Argumentative topics suit students who like debating; descriptive and narrative topics suit students who enjoy telling stories.
