These debate topics are grouped so you can find a motion in seconds, whether you are in class 6, class 11 or college. Each topic is written as a clear motion, ready for a class activity, an inter school debate competition or an online debate round.
Start with the short guide on choosing and preparing a topic. Then pick a list, read the two sample debate openings to see how a strong first minute sounds, and use the points for and against on mobile phones as a model for your own preparation.
How to Choose and Prepare Debate Topics
What Is a Debate Competition?
A debate competition is a contest where speakers argue for or against a statement called the motion. One side supports it (the proposition) and the other opposes it (the opposition). Judges give marks for content, logic, rebuttal, confidence and time management, not for who is "right". In Hindi, a debate competition is called वाद-विवाद प्रतियोगिता.
School debates usually give each speaker two to four minutes. An inter school debate competition often adds a short rebuttal round, and an online debate competition follows the same rules on a video call, so a clear voice and a steady camera matter.
How to Choose a Good Debate Topic
- Two real sides: a fair motion has strong points on both sides. "Pollution is bad" is not debatable; "Firecrackers should be banned during festivals" is.
- Right for your age: class 6 to 8 students do best with school and family topics; class 11, class 12 and college students can take on policy, technology and social issues.
- Easy to find examples: choose a topic where you can give examples from your city, school or news you have read.
- Respectful: avoid topics that attack a religion, a community, a political party or a named person.
How to Prepare in Four Steps
- Write the motion at the top of a page and define its key words in one line each.
- Draw two columns, For and Against, and list at least five points in each, even for the side you are not speaking on.
- Pick your three strongest points and find one fact or real-life example for each.
- Practise aloud with a timer, then cut anything that runs over.

Debate on Social Media in Favour: Sample Opening
Good morning to the honourable judges, respected teachers and my dear friends. The motion before us is: social media does more good than harm. I stand firmly in favour of it.
Think of a girl in a small town who wants to learn coding but has no teacher nearby. Tonight she can watch free lessons, join a study group and post her doubts. Social media gave her that classroom. It also gives ordinary people a voice. A broken road, a lost child or a family searching for a blood donor can reach thousands of people within an hour.
My opponents will say it wastes time and spreads rumours. But do we blame the pen when someone writes a lie? The fault lies in careless use, not in the tool. Used wisely, social media connects, teaches and saves lives.
I request the house to support the motion. Thank you.
Debate on Artificial Intelligence Against the Motion: Sample Opening
Respected judges, teachers and fellow debaters, a very good morning to all of you. Today I speak against the motion that artificial intelligence will do more good than harm to students.
Let me begin with a question. If a machine writes your essay, solves your sums and summarises your chapter, what exactly have you learnt? Real learning happens when we struggle, make mistakes and try again. These tools remove the struggle, and the learning goes with it.
There is a second danger. A chatbot can sound confident and still be wrong. A student who copies its answer without checking may write false facts in an exam or a project. Teachers, too, find it harder to judge what a child truly understands.
I am not against technology. I only say that a young mind must grow strong before it leans on a machine. For these reasons, I oppose the motion. Thank you.
Debate on Mobile Phones in Favour and Against: Key Points
Motion: Students should be allowed to carry mobile phones to school. Use these points to build either side.
- For: parents can reach their child quickly in an emergency or when plans change
- For: students can look up facts, use a dictionary and check the timetable in seconds
- For: learning to use a phone responsibly is itself a life skill
- For: a phone can replace a calculator, camera and torch for school projects
- Against: games, chats and videos pull attention away from lessons
- Against: phones can be used for cheating in tests and for cyberbullying
- Against: costly phones create a gap between students and can be lost or stolen
- Against: the school landline and office already handle emergencies
Tips to Win a Debate Competition
- Read the motion word by word. Speaking on "should be banned" is very different from "should be limited".
- Begin with a sharp question or a real incident from your town, not with a dictionary definition.
- Give each argument a label, such as "My first point is about health", so the judges can follow and note it.
- Use examples from Indian life: your school canteen, a local market, a news story you read.
- Listen carefully to the speaker before you and answer at least one of their points by name.
- Speak slowly, look at the judges and use pauses after your strongest lines.
- Finish a few seconds early with a clear closing sentence rather than rushing past the bell.
Questions students ask
What is a debate competition?
A debate competition is a contest in which speakers argue for or against a motion. Judges award marks for arguments, examples, rebuttal, confidence and time. It trains students to think logically and speak clearly in public.
What is the meaning of debate competition in Hindi?
In Hindi, a debate competition is called वाद-विवाद प्रतियोगिता. The term joins वाद, an argument, and विवाद, a dispute, so the name describes two sides arguing over a topic. The Hindi debate topics list above can be used for such contests.
What are the best debate topics for students?
The best topics have two strong sides and connect to students' own lives. Homework, mobile phones in school, online classes, social media and board exams are popular because everyone has examples to share. For senior classes, motions on artificial intelligence, the environment and careers work well.
What should a debate competition notice include?
A school notice should give the name of the event, the motion or list of topics, the date, time and venue, who can take part, the time limit for each speaker and the last date to give names. It should end with the name and designation of the teacher in charge.
Which debate topics should be avoided?
Avoid motions that target a religion, caste, community, political party or a named person. Such topics turn into personal attacks rather than reasoned arguments. Choose issues where both sides can be argued with facts and respect.
